Earth technique happens in a process when the earth element user manipulate the energy and put it into his surrounding, which making an effect or changes to the surrounding. That effect or changes turns to be a technique of earth jutsu; it can be for attack or sometimes for defense.

7 huge earth pillars rise from the ground below us*

To control the earth,
you must understand the earth.
It will do the same for you.
And when you and nature/earth fully have
a complete understanding for each other,
this is when you will become a Doton master.
But your not quite ready yet.
Now concentrate on the earth below you and bring yourself hmm..
Lets say halfway underground.
