They don't get respect because they don't respect themselves. Rioting and destroying things only makes the issue worse for the ones rioting. It ends up with the good cops hesitating to take action against criminals because of the color of their skin, and bad cops having more reason to take more action than necessary to deal with 'criminals' based on the color of their skin. It simply does not make the situation better.
If I were in a 'peaceful' protest and some asshat decides to try riling people up or is spouting their mouth off, I would knock the fool out before they start some crap. If more people knew how to look for agitators and handle them on their own, riots would be a bit more infrequent.
My thought with all of this is, if ya'll hate the cops so much or are fed up with the way they handle things, why do you bother calling them? If this is how you think all cops react, why call them? Same thought I have in regards to families with a mentally ill member who has a violent episode with a weapon and winds up getting shot and killed by the police, and then they want to sue the police because they expected them to come give the person a hug, not shoot them. "Oh but they should have extra special training to deal with mental health patients." Yeah, let's forget that we as a family know the person better than anyone else and yet we expect some stranger to come in and 'talk them down or control them.' If you can't handle them when they are acting violent, why do you think the police will be any better?
The thing I find it interesting about most of these cases is that the supposed victims, all have a criminal history. They aren't innocent, first-time offenders, or actual under 18 120 pound teenagers who don't have any history of dealing with the police. They have records and should know how to act when dealt with by the police.
I will say, however, this is the only case out of all of them so far that I would have found to be out of order. Granted, the officers probably made some sort of mistake in procedure rather than purposefully intending to harm the man, but still, if they are in custody already and have asked for medical attention, then they should be checked out. Whether the officers believe the person is injured or not, they aren't doctors and should take them to a hospital. That should be standard operating procedure. And if you make a mistake, own up to it, especially that mistake injures or kills someone. Otherwise, you look guilty of more.
Regardless, the family should simply sue the department, get money, have it publicized in the news, and everyone else should just shut the F up.
