I'm interested in starting to read these novels and learn about why happens after the 6th movie. There are so many books and comics but I need some help in finding out which ones are the closest to being canon and deal with the Solo's and Luke

star wars has tons of great books and stories
with parallels just like naruto's..
its great I really enjoy them
you will see lots of great characters
and why they should have already made the original starwars cast
perform in the new movies together after episode 6......XD have fun and enjoy them like others

Well, all of the comics and novels "signed" by Lucas or with his "stamp" are cannon. There are some the predate the known 2 film trilogies and some that continue on in the times that came after it. There are also many stories and many periods covered by stories of games. For example, Star Wars the Force Unleashed 1&2 develop the time between the 3rd and 4th movies and the rise of the empire.
