I did that as well. But it seems being more true about what people says. You should defiantly try to draw off characters that you can see on google and such things.

You learn tons of different styles and how people drew them that way.

But sure you can do that as well if you want. But it feels for me now that you learn more from watching others peoples drawings instead of just trying to memorize a character in head.
