[Question] "Spread rep around to other members first!" Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

"Spread rep around to other members first!" Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

A few minutes ago I tried to give rep to a member. I was then told something along the lines of "Spread rep around to other members first!" Honestly I can't even remember the last time I had given that member rep, and it wasn't in my history on the user cp.

So first of all, I have a question: is the rep delay time-based, or is it based on how many other members you have given rep since the last time you gave to the member in question?

If it's time based, then never mind. But if it's based on the rep you have given to different members, doesn't that defeat the purpose? I know why this restriction is in place; it's to limit rep abuse and spamming. However, giving me a message like "Spread rep around to other members first!" only influences me to rep a bunch of people undeservedly, just so I can get back and reward the member who was truly worthy of it.

It's not time based, it's made in such a way that you'll need to give rep to a significant amount of members before giving the same person again (Probably to avoid rep abuse).

You got it right with that one. And yeah, the "Spread rep around to other members first!" is encouraging, especially when one has to rep like 20+ people to do so. If the person is a newbie, well then there we go. In fact, this is what I believe was the root of that whole fiasco about a year ago. The members simply didn't know they was breaking rules (And there was a lot left out in the rules concerning rep compared to now).

Hmm. I hadn't thought that far ahead. Maybe two or three days? I was considering a time delay because it would discourage pointless repping. But then you would run into the problem of people creating a bunch of alts to give to their main once the time expired. However, the alts would probably have low rep-power so it may not matter much. Or, it wouldn't matter at all if a sort of IP check could be instituted.

This could work....if only the admins knew how much pointless repping is a result of trying to rep another member for a worthy cause. In other words, how many members pointless rep just for the heck of it, compared to those who do it because they want to hurry and rep the other member again for a worthy cause. I'm not sure if figuring this out is feasible.

It's not time based most of the time, it's for how many people you rep. You have to wait 24 hours if you rep too many people. And if you rep the same person twice (each different posts), then you can't do that, you have to spread about 20 rep before repping the same person. And spreading can also result in the 24 hour thing so it conflicts, that means don't rep people too often. Also by 'spread rep', it's not asking you to randomly spread rep for every post you see. It's telling you to spread rep to people who deserv it. You took it the wrong way. ^_^
