Mate Captain Tsubasa is my childhood.

The best sport manga ever for me.

That manga got me with hype as a kid.

I love them, I prefer watching real sports most of the times but some are just completely awesome. For me bio-pics and the ones where real action+character development is focused are favorites.

Real is my all time favourite closely followed by SD and Kokou-no-hito and many more which I like.

Yes, sports genre is acutally my favourite in the medium. If I was asked why, usually because they are fun to watch and it's something else seeing the characters growing and getting development. Competent authors can make the tension grow and that's where the whole gist of sports series is.

If I would list best/worst series, I'd say Slam Dunk/Ashita no Joe/Real for best and Kuroko no Basket for worst. Like yeah, KNB is a disgrace.

I only like Sports anime, not manga.
KnB and Haikyuu for example. But still, I prefer watching the NBA or playing the sports irl.

Of course! For boxing, Ashita no Joe and Hajime no Ippo are best known for it. Try out Ashita no Joe first, which I personally like it way better than Hajime no Ippo.

As for martial arts, judo or wrestling can be included. Can't think of any atm.

I always found sports manga a very tricky genre. The reason being that it's difficult to visually present something as dynamic as a sport well. In most cases you also need some kind of affinity with the sport at hand. I've heard that both Haikyuu and Kuroko no Baskt are good series, but I never bothered reading them because neither volleyball nor basketball interest me.

I once read a series called Suzuka where athletics was the central sport and I liked it. However the sport on itself was nothing more than background. The real focus of the series was how talented athletes deal with real life issues that affect their sport achievement and vice-versa. The same author also created a short basketball series, but I only read that one because he was the author of Suzkua.

I also once read a football series called Giant Killing, but I just read it because I like football. It wasn't that particularly special.

Recently I read a series about waterpolo, but that was just because of the hilarious perverted gags. All the guys who joined the waterpolo club only did so because then they could eye goggle the girls of the club, which most of the time led to perverted antics.

Not really. Martial Arts is considered a separate genre from the sports genre. The reason is probably that many martial arts series tend to go over the top with the abilities of the martial artists, which are in most cases not even remotely realistic. Even series that try to appear somewhat normal, easily get seduced into trying to push it. Sports manga are almost always normal.

If you would search for Hajime no Ippo, most hosting sites would not tag it with the label martial arts, but with that of sports. It's probably the same thing with judo or wrestling.

Martial arts is something that seems to be specifically used for series where a large variety of fighting styles are used and/or where they are on superhuman levels. Something like HnI that only focuses on one specific thing and that as far as I know is normal, is a sports manga. So there is a subtle, but clear distinction between the two. No one is going to consider for example HSDK as being a sports manga, despite that both judo and boxing are prominent in it.

That's a common problem but not always the case, per say i have no interest in American Football/Tennis/IGO(Japanese board game)/BasketBall/Baseball/Cycling/Boxing.. etc but for some reason i liked the manga who use all of the above as their central plot for its story,

Ironically as a soccer fans i don't find most soccer genre manga to be interesting/entertaining compared to the other manga who use a central plot from another sport in which i have no interest in,

So what does that tell you ? tricky ? yes but there is more than meets the eye.

Nah, just tricky. It's a given that any kind of sports manga needs to put something extra in it if it doesn't want only to appeal to people who like that specific sport and doesn't want end up in giving hollow chapters of people just playing a certain sport each time. So what you call 'more than meets the eye' is an almost absolute necessity for a sports manga otherwise it will not work, hence I said they're tricky. On one hand they have the inherent problem that they need to bring forth something as dynamic as a sport with a static medium. But on the other hand if they are going to solely focus on the dynamic of the sport, well then they will have a hollow story, which will not appeal to a large crowd.

So yeah very tricky genre. I would say it's a problem almost unique to the sports genre as the sport on itself from the start almost functions as a dead weight where the author needs to cope with, while normally it's the exact opposite. For example the series Air Gear is often also tagged as a sports manga, but it's different that its 'sport' is a fictional one. It automatically elevates the series without doing anything special as its uniqueness automatically attracts a crowd. That's different when you have normal sports like football or basketball. If they will solely fall back on the sport, they're pretty much screwed.
