I think he means that Itachi is an excellent shinobi, in the way he sacrificed everything for his village and "put to shame" means he feels ashamed he couldn't be in that level.

I think hashirama just meant that he was a better person in terms of faith and how you might describe itachi. This is of course doesn't mean itachi was better than hashirama in terms of strength if that's what this thread is about.

Hashirama didn't mean Itachi was the stronger than him, if he was Itachi could of dealt with Kabuto so much faster.
