They kinda sorta fought, well natsu punched him then zeref realized that Natsu could one day defeat him...

Also his teammates were around during the above scuffle; So zeref probably knows him because one of his teammates called out to him before or after the punch...

It's a mystery, but I think Zeref was somehow connected to the dragons. That's the only thing I got. He knew Acnologia was coming, he seemed to understand when Wendy was asking why it wouldn't talk to them.

I also think zeref has familiarity with the dragons, so he has an idea of their strength & thus the strength of the dragon slayers.

For some reason I feel it's Zeref's fault for Igneel, Metalicana and Grandeeney abandonment.
