You're actually most likely correct, Karin is the only one crazy enough, immature enough, and obsessed with Sasuke enough to steal the Akatsuki's title in order to get revenge on Sasuke for betraying her for Sakura. If that's what happened.

Karin tried to clone Sasuke in Orochimaru's lab in order to have her own version, but he turned out looking like a weird elf boy with white hair.
