If Naruto and/or Sasuke was dead, they'd better explain it very well. My theory, if it's confirm, is that Kawaki is a clone mixed with Naruto and Sasuke's DNA and Orochimaru found a way to gain access to Rikudo chakra and placed it inside him. Maybe Mitsuki was just an experimentation and spy, just like Kabuto was, until Kawaki could complete the mission to take out Naruto and Sasuke.

Just my theory.
