Sasuke returned in order to decode a scroll that even the Rinnegan could not decipher (--->discovered from one of Kaguya's dimensions)
This was what Momoshiki attacked him over--> Returns to relay this info to Naruto.

I think that's because those are the "new" and "old" Otsutsuki clothes. I mean apparently momshiki was around since kaguya ate the god fruit so it'd make sense that the otsutsuki attire changed over the passed thousand years. Momoshiki & Kaguya's clothes are based on the heian nobles.
