Spiral Zetsu???

Maybe I missed something somewhere, but I've been wondering why the spiral Zetsu exists at all. Does it represent anything, or is it just a different form of Zetsu? I think it would be kind of strange to just force something like that to exist just for the purpose of explaining Obito's mask. Not like it's a huge plot issue or anything; I'm just curious.


Oh shit as I was typing this something occurred to me. Not sure if this has been confirmed, but when Obito was screwing around as Tobi, he had a different voice. Maybe spiral Zetsu was somehow in control of him at those times. Idk
