He didn't awaken one, author made it clear with Himawari that he would have a pair of Byakugan instead of just one. If Boruto awakened a dojutsu in one eye it wouldn't be a Byakugan but maybe some derivation of the Tenseigan. Either that or Mitsuki gave him his eye because Oro can replace it.
