Pride is most likely the root. Allow me explain.
Probably 90% of the time you cause some sort of Pain to a person (whether physical or emotional), most of the time, it's probably because you did not consider how the other person but only yourself. This is a form of pride since you subconsciously consider yourself to be a higher priority than the other person. Things that I consider despicable that's the result of pride.
1. Arrogance- the most obvious form of pride. An unadulterated thought that a person is beneath you.
2. Greed- this doesn't sound like a form of pride, but it is. Self-interest is fine, but excessive self-interest at someone else's expense is what I'd label as greed. It's the act of you thinking your pleasure is more important than everyone else's.
3. Sadistic actions- Similar to greed in the sense that it's prioritizing your pleasure at someone's expense, but making it the direct result of someone's misfortune.
4. Philosophical and religious oppression- Extremism is essentially man putting himself in God's judgement seat. In a philosophical sense it's like Germany and Racism against Jews. In that case it's like "I decide that these people's aren't worth living simply because they exist." In a religious sense, it's just as bad even if it turns our your religion was the correct one because it's essentially saying "I won't let people discover the right path, and I don't trust God's judgement. I'll make the decision for him right now." Both the Holy Roman Catholic Church and Islamic extremists have been guilty of this.
5. Excessive lust- It's essentially "I don't care how many bonds I make with people, I can throw them away as I please."
6. Envy- It's a violent form of Jealousy that probably is like "How dare this person have this good thing?! I deserve it more than him!"
7. Vengeance- Not to be confused with justice. This is taking out frustration on someone for being hurt in some way. It doesn't even always only involve the guilty party. For instance, A man kills a neighbors son. The neighbor then kills his son in retribution. This is thinking that you have the absolute right to pass judgement because you were hurt in some way.
There's traces of pride in each of these. From the Christian perspective, there's another thing indicating that pride is the root of all evil. Eve and Adam ate the fruit in order to become God's equal or superior. This is also pride. It was the very first sin. It's also the sin that made angles into demons.
It's something that goes along with being human, which is why I voted human condition.
