Genjutsu is the art of the illusion, aiming to cause pain not through inflicting wounds on the enemies body but designed more to interrupt the bodies senses and lead the pain receptors to believe they are in pain when actually they are not. A genjutsu is achieved when the user is able to manipulate their chakra into the brain of the opponent and take complete control of what the opponent is seeing or hearing through controlling the many sections in the victims brain. Inflicting false pain being the main usage, there are hwever many others, such as complete bodily control or control of ones mind. Genjutsu is also a widely used tool in the world of interrogation as users are able to torture the targets mind in order to extract information without the target having any control over what he/she gives away.
Genjutsu is most commonly associated with the ocular powers of the Uchiha clans Sharingan, as they are able to inflict a genjutsu on the opponent merely by engaging in eye contact and without the usage of handseals. Itachi Uchiha being the most widely recognised Sharingan Genjutsu user.
A Genjutsu is broken when the targeted shinobi manges to revert their chakra flow in their mind back to normal and clear there body of any opposing chakra, or when the person under the genjutsu is inflicted with physical pain.

So either the targeted shinobi will inflict pain on themselves (most commonly by bitibg there own lip). Or to cleanse the chakra inside their body. A genjutsu can also be broken by Chidori Nagashi.

Strong points of the technique: If used at the right moment it's a jutsu that would be relatively hard top figure out if on the receiving end as it could be the minutest of changes that you don't think of but still makes you reconsider a move.
Weak points of the technique: IF used i9ncorrectly it would be very easy to figure out, and also it doesn't interrupt your opponent's moves or perception of your moves in anyway so may be limited in use, also it would not remain unnoticed for long if used too blatantly.
Questions: Can you make things appear in the landscape? Such as, making it seem like you had shot a fireball towards them when in fact there was nothing there? etc.. or is it plainly used for modifying pre-existing pieces of scenery?

In my opinion this can only be used to change pre existing pieces of scenery. You can for example make grass look like it catches on fire, or, indeed, make it look like a tree is falling. What you cannot do is add things.

May I ask what you mean by Inappropriate? I'd say if it's legal in the description of the move it's appropriate.

I meant incorrect xD
You mentioned that using the jutsu in an incorrect manner would mean that the opponent can figure out it is a genjutsu more easily. What would be, in your opinion, an incorrect way to use it?

Just anything too blatant really, like your original setting the ground on fire just seems a bit farfetched. But then I suppose in a way the more outrageous things could also work in your favor as they are probably far scarier and would invoke panic on top of logical thinking.

After performing the required five handseals my body sees my opponent disintegrate into a colony of cherry blossoms, these cherry blossoms then proceed to engulf my opponent and completely block his view of my true body.
I perform one single handseal and proceed to throw a paper bomb through the air toward my unbeknownst opponent, in their eyes I have sent a clone of myself running toward them at full speed. The paper bomb will explode on impact and therefore makes any counter of my opponent toward the 'clone' very dangerous.

Strong points of the technique: The effects of the jutsu are more than enough to help set up a new attack or technique, even if dispelled the genjutsu would take time to get up to full effect meaning that you'd receive quite a good timeframe for setting up.
Weak points of the technique: There are no elements of known cannon techniques which allow the user control over flowers/ petals, therefore for the body to turn into petals would leave the opponent with limited options to sort through before discovering they were trapped

It also leaves the opponent little time to decipher the genjutsu.
Weak points of the technique: As the kunai appears as a clone the enemy would be more likely to use a technique to counter, as techniques can be fast and long ranged this leaves the user open to being caught in there own explosive tag explosion.
