No he need the senju cells to awaken the rinnegan. He implanted them after his battle with Hashirama but nothing happened for years and then finally when he was near death, it finally awakened. Nagato was perfect because of his background of being an Uzumaki, who are known to have special chakra and strong lifeforce.

Allright, so because Madara was near death when he awakened the rinnegan, it was useless to battle anyone because of his age?
And because Nagato has special chakra & a strong life-force its perfect to give him the rinnegan right?

Yes not only his age but he was only alive because of his connection to the tree, it was keeping him alive. Once that connection was broken he died. But yeah everything else is correct.

Nagato was chosen because he could use the Rinnegan to the greatest potential (being an Uzumaki) out of the candidates available. Plus Madara needed Nagato to survive long enough to revive him, and what better person than an Uzumaki to do that.

Because then Obito would be the one to revive him. So Nagato would have been the pawn all along. Obito was Madara's backup.

What I don't get is how no one noticed that something happened with Nagato. He was a child living with his family, and from what we saw with Sasuke, it takes a while to get used to eye transplants. There's also the fact that those were adult eyes, and he was a child.
