Why is Whitebeard called Whitebeard if he has no beard and yes a Moustache?

I just started and I'm at the part where luffy is moving around in buggys cage
And i t has the little bars and everything
So I don't understand why luffy being the rubber band man can't get out >_>

The reason that his name is Whitebeard despite having no actual beard is because in the Japanese language, there are not different words for beard and mustache. His name uses the word "Hige" which, by itself, is a blanket term for facial hair. Despite his smooth chin, according to One Piece Yellow, Whitebeard is his official English name. [ ]

Because Whitebeard sounds like a mighty pirate name. Nothing more to it really. He could have gone with his last name if he wanted to.

Newgate pirates has a nice ring to it as well

It is because he is so bad ass, giving him a beard would be too much bad assness for one character. The anime would wouldn't be able to handle it. That is why they only gave him a stach.

Or what Pekoms said. Either or.

It's the tralnslation. The word hige means both mustache and beard. Subbers thought of saying Whitebeard is more decent than saying Whitemustache.

Whitemustache sounds very akward, so they went with Whitebeard.
