I think maybe it was shadows but I don't know why the sand doesn't protect him.

Well if it is due to shadow possession then the Nara clan are Gaara's nightmare

Gaara had sand armor on so he wouldnt get hurt anyways... Thats what I think, or Kishi just didnt know at that point and wanted to make it interesting

is this really matters now? Its just like raikage had a hand after being lost it to amaterasu, sort of mistake in drawing.

well, if i recall correctly, his sand moved independantly of his own thought most of the time because didnt his mothers spirit or chakra or whatever possess the sand? If thats the case couldnt shadow possession take control of the inanimate sands consciousness as well? I say this, remembering how back then during gaaras fight with naruto, the sand kept up with naruto even when gaara couldnt which first showed that it was him 100% controlling it, then i thought i read another issue later showing how gaaras mother put her chakra into the sand to protect him.

Gaara's mother is apparently responsible for the Shield of Sand, while the ability to manipulate the sand according to their will is an ability all Shukaku Jinchuriki possess.

Perhaps because he was so engrossed in trying to kill Lee due to his mental instability that he tuned out everything around him? In any case, we can just fall back on Plot no Jutsu since this really isn't all that important.

That's wrong, Gaara (if not any other) has a special Kekkei Genkai which allowed him to manipulate sand, it has nothing to do with being a Shukaku Jinchuriki.

You can say the same thing about the Kyuubi, just because Naruto has it does it mean he can control something special? No.

Also, that part in the manga is just a mistake. People who use shadow control techniques can kill off their opponent if they wanted without feeling pain.
