When Itachi tried to kidnap Naruto and Jiraya arrived he said Jiraya was too strong. But when Oro and Pervy Sage fought Oro won, and we all know Itachi beated Oro. So....

Itachi was lying because he didn't want to have to murder Jiraiya, since he couldn't have stopped himself in front of Kisame, and would have to forcefully fight Jiraiya and capture Naruto.
