I generally classify people according to their stupidity.
For example, you believe that nations go to war over oil. Nations do not go to war over oil. Huge investment costs and the existing competition pretty much ensures that you can never recover your investment within a reasonable time frame.

.... Nothing. They weren't doing anything wrong. Their country had been held by strict treaties that decimated their industry and economy following the conclusion of The Great War. Why should the current generations suffer because of the poor decision of their parents and grandparents?
Then the allies came along and killed many of them for fighting to try and give their kids a better future (what any sensible parent or prospective parent would do).
Now - the whole racial superiority agenda of the Nazis was certifiably evil.... but your average German soldier was what he was.
Japan was in a similar boat. They had been wrangled into embargoes and other such things because they were merely looking out for the interests of their people and brining chaotic lands under their influence.
The more you learn about conflicts, the idea that you can so clearly define actions, events, and people as good/evil blurs. The phrase: "this was all a big misunderstanding" can explain 90% of arguments and just about every war.
The problem is that people reject their nature and so rarely come to understand it. We are predators. We have some of the sharpest color vision on the planet in a binocular arrangement to provide excellent depth perception. Take any 'smart' herbivore. There's an even smarter carnivore that eats it.
The features that have allowed us to develop into sentient beings are the same features shared amongst nearly all land based predators. Our social instincts are driven by reproductive rights and drives. Jealousy, anger, happiness, love - most of those can be tied directly to mating (that then branched into other portions of our behavior and culture). We attempt to dominate the time and life of people we would like to procreate with in various ways. It has even changed our anatomy (women 'stealth ovulate' to force a male to mate repeatedly with her if he seriously wants a child by her).
The reason why so many people do evil things is because they do not realize what they are working with or what pressures are acting upon them. If you don't understand that the predator inside of you is desiring to illustrate its dominance over territory in a work-place dispute... and that it's calling up every bit of martial arts training while trying to reconstruct motor-neural pathways ("muscle-memory") in the background... then you may just 'freak out' and put the guy in the hospital (or end up dealing with a murder charge).
Usually, it is most commonly expressed in relationships. One of the quickest ways to drive a guy into a homicidal rage is to involve a female he has laid claim on. It makes sense - but it reinforces the argument that what we believe to be 'human' nature is simply the natural progression of Red Queen dynamics upon an isolated set of primates that had self-selected a preference for 'clever/entertaining' males (by females).
