Answer will be given at the end of the week on friday @10pm Boston time. First person to get it right and SHOW THEIR WORK wins. Ill be doing these for the entire month of June and sometimes the monetary amounts will be different depending on the difficulty of the question. Yes this is real, I recently graduated from MIT and got hired as a chemical engineer for BP, my salary is more money than i could ever spend on my own, so ive decided to spread the love around. Lets start off with an easy question. You only get one try so make it count, one little mistake and that's it.


A cylindrical resistor of radius 6.00nm and length 19.8cm is made of material that has a resistivity of 3.50E-5 ohm meters. What is the current density and the potential difference when the power dissipation is 2W?

First, let's go step wise:
Given: resistivity=3.5E-05, Radius=6nm, Length, l=9.8cm, Power, P=2W
Solution:
1. Calculation of Area.
Area/Surface area=2*pie*r*h+2*pie*r^2
Putting values of r and h,
we get, surface area=7.6444*10E-9
2. Calculation of Resistance.
Resistance(R)=Resistivity*length/area.
We have all the values, put them and you will get answer as,
R=928.41 ohms.
3. Calculation of Current.
Power=I(square)*R
Using this we will get,
current, I=46.44 mA
4. Calculation of Current density.
Current density=I/A
Putting values of current and area,
we get, Density=6.22*10E6 A/m.
5. Calculation of voltage
Using Ohm's law,
Voltage=Current*Resistance.
Put value of resistance and current and you will get value of voltage,
V= 46.414mA*928.41ohm
V=43.09V.
