Shippuden's story became the story of a uniter VS a divider. Messiah VS a Ruler. Explored in some pretty insightful, interesting depth too. Naruto might be simple but his character is a catalyst for change and peace by changing hearts, no matter how rooted in evil they are. In a simplified world like Naruto, evil & hate are Zetsu-made inventions to ultimately make a nice statement on peace.

Cut to the fanbase where the word 'Soloking' is a thing and applied to basically anyone. Everything is a wanking contest of Itachi or Minato. Hashirama or Madara. These days it's Naruto and Sasuke. A narrative treated like a sports tournament, is Naruto a series that suffered for being a Shonen? A series with a fanbase that failed to understand it in favour of smug elitist loner characters because they're 'cool'.

Just an interesting observation is all. Did Kishi fail Naruto by giving the 'cool' traits to the villain characters? Or did the average fan fail the series? ​

Without that all they care about is what cool thing they do next, how they look, how strong they are, what's they pairing etc. And forget the story completely.

I'm not going to act like Naruto Shippuden is a piece of art but there is a surprising amount to unpack otherwise we wouldn't be here after all these years exploring these arcs and characters.

I'll basically stick around forever on this site as long as there's a handful of intelligent people who care above something above feats or whether Naruto or Sasuke's d*ck is bigger.

To be fair, Kishimoto himself forgot the "story" part of this series himself, so fans caring for nothing more than pairings and powers is normal and expected. Granted, that's something that bothers me as well, that no one really appreciates characters beyond just their powers.

I agree with you tho. But i think even when the series was at it's highest people were still forgetting the story.

I can't attest to that, since I wasn't really around for that. I marathoned Naruto all the way to the Pain arc in like a year then dropped it until Obito's mask came off, so I can't tell how this fan base has evolved.

Oh it's always been about the fights and who is the bigger power fantasy cooler soloking. I see Naruto as the exact same as Marvel and DC. Where they came to fame for a great cast of characters & side-characters and then once matured, tackles some fairly complex or interesting material, themes and character depth.
Yet still the biggest question will still be who wins... Batman or Superman!!!! Hulk or Wolverine? Could the Justice league beat Avengers? Except Naruto's fanbase is even more diluted of any meaningful quality, fair amounts of adults read comics after all. Naruto appeals to a veeeery loud, certain kind of loud internet user.

Imagine the Civil War arc if they removed all the talk of human rights, law enforcement philosophy and Cap/Tony's long history and just made it a punching contest.

Match-ups are fun as hell and I like doing it too but if that's all the series becomes to you then you may as well be watching Power Rangers.
