Are they truly hiding something or is this just bad writing?
They aren't taking her question about Karin serious.

Exactly but some people refuse to articulate that!
+Rep 4 u!
"Oh her? That's the international fugitive I used to hang around with back in my day when I was killing your uncle, murdering people, and planning global genocide" wouldn't go over so well for a 13 year old.
I said the question about Sakura, not Karin.

I thought it was pretty obvious XD. When Sarada asked about Karin, Sasuke was like wha?? and then Sarada just flipped.
It make no sense when they targeted an Uchiha when they had plenty of eyes. The only reason is she is caring the blood that can revive something.

They are targeting Salad to use her as bait so they can get Sasuke. Probably after the Rinnegan, not the Sharingan.
She is showing on a secret meeting for something completly fanciful to their eyes and asking why he was out. For the first point, no adult understood what she was talking about, ( look at their face, they don't understaind wtf was that question), for the second point, it's not her buisness since it's a secret mission and a school girl have no right to ask about the mission.
Plus it's not like Sakura is freaking out about Sarada asking these questions.
And Shizune's and Sakura's conversation didn't go along the lines of,
Sakura: "That daughter of mine..." :wesobi:
Shizune: "I think you mean step-daughter." :bdpf:
