So, what even was Shikaku's plan? Were HQ's deaths even necessary?

Have i missed it in the last few chapters? It doesn't even seem as if his and the rest of HQ's deaths were really even that necessary. I'm sure that he didn't take into account, Sasuke meeting Orochimaru, reanimating the four Hokages and the Five Kage actually surviving Madara's onslaught. It just feels like an insult, knowing that they had to fulfil their duty and create one last strategy against Obito, Madara and Juubi when it didn't even have that much of a notable effect on them.
