So... What did Madara do all this time?

There was always something I was wondering.
Madara fought Hashirama when he was probably in his 20's. After he survived the battle through izanagi, he injected Hashirama's DNA and went to live somewhere in the caves or underground.

What did he do all this time from his 20's to when he was old and activated the rinnegan? (before he even met Obito)
Was he even planning on awakening the rinnegan, or did it come as a surprise?

For some reason I always imagined that when Madara came back to fight Hashirama it was shortly after he left. They seemed fairly young when Madara left the village.
So did it take him over a decade until he came back to attack the hidden leaf?

Seem like it. Hashirama telling that story as if it happen within 2 weeks of creating the village.
