So...was Deidara actually an idiot or not?

It's a difficult one to call because at times Deidara can be a totally threatening beast in control of the whole situation and at other times could be a massive idiot or be the comedy relief.

We know that the guy has got pretty good battle tactics but his personality (like most of the good characters in Naruto) get's in the way of their power. IMO Deidara was seriously smart but was simply blinded by his love of art. He cared more about style than actually winning and was basically insane when it came to a fight.

Which brings up another point. Imagine Deidara with say, Shikamaru or Itachi's intellect

So although this is the guy who blew himself up to kill one Uchiha kid when it didn't even work, attacks Akatsuki members on his first day, gets captured by Kankuro and got fooled by a shadow clone (anime counts)- I still think Deidara was fairly smart- just...in an odd way. It's a tough one to call.

well at the start of shippuden he was a force to be reckoned with. taking out the kazekage by himself and shit ha but later even in edo mode he was easily taken out

so kishi definately prefers the good characters progress from the evil ones

Remember it was an obsession that drew him, those things can get pretty nasty. Especially with a maniac like Deidara.

The thing is, Deidara's personality changed after he got paired with Tobi, he was a ruthless tactician with Sasori and he seemed like a totally different character
(seriously, getting your arm squashed by sand doesn't even earn a grunt from you but shuriken lightly scratching them is a whole big deal?!)

I guess Tobi just rubbed him off the wrong way

I'd say he was just. . .Immature. He could come up with great tactics. But I wouldn't go so far as to call him incredibly smart. And with Shikamaru's intellect. . . He'd be a frightening foe to beat.
