I think that only applies to DC comics.

Good meaning isn't it...
It's not what I am underneath, but what I do that defies me.

I need an example.

Ok sure, Four Words: Fear, Anger, Hate, and Suffering. Imagine if you loved your girlfriend so much and feared for her to ever be taken from you or murdered so you train hard to protect her befause she is all you had left in the world. And one day she was taken hostage by a mob of gunmen so you risked your life for her sake in a crisis situation. But instead, gunmen decide to kill her and leave you in a room with her gushing in blood and you can't do Anything about it. You watch until she bleeds out, and then the gunmen leaves the scene rendering you puzzled and heartbrokened. Your fate of life changes and you begin to change into a dark person who has no one else in your life and has nothing to lose for but bloodshed...

Just picture it in many other ways when you fight hard for something positively only to be taken away from you in a drastically way.

Doesn't work all the time.

Of course not, but it just proved that it's not only in DC Comics. There are always symbolism in comics that can be equivalent to real life. Duh, authors get their ideas from real life events and add a little fantasy into them.
