Unless it's mentioned in the manga, DB, or Kishi himself; we don't know if Ashura used mokuton. Also you need to be able to create both water and earth chakra and combine them to make mokuton as Yamato stated so even if Naruto had the ability to use it he still couldn't make the 2 elements he needed to use Mokuton. He gained them in the war but he didn't know any hand signs for it. If he didn't have mokuton before, he should have the ability after getting Hashirama cells so if he got trained by Yamato and/or Tsunade then he could use mokuton jutsus.

Sasuke got the Rinnegan because he [Indra] received Chakra from Hashirama [Ashura] and the Rikudou Chakra merely acted as a catalyst to the awakening process, since we know Madara had to wait for a very long time.

Now the Gaiden has offered a proof, that even the stage 1 thinkers can't refuse
