It was essentially a setting up for Madara's revival and to keep Obito himself partially alive.

Obito wasn't originally supposed to be the one that obtained all of that power. The original master mind behind it was Madara. It would make sense that he would be the one to achieve a near perfect SO6P. Obito was just a pawn of Madara's who tried to do things his own way and it back fired on him.

I'm sure he's going to do something big to screw over Madara's plan later on. His role was important because it was from him that Naruto learnt about determination (Neji's death). If Obito had never preached about loneliness, Naruto would still be naive and dive head first for Madara and get himself killed. That's my interpretation anyway.
