So.... Obito doesn't have to upgrade his eyes then?

Way back when Obito declared war on the alliance, he made it clear that his ultimate plan was to restore the Juubi and become its host, that has happened. He also stated, however, that using the Juubi's power he would 'enhance' the power of his eyes enabling him to cast the Genjutsu himself. Up to this point, we have seen no sign of Obito's eyes changing and even now, it seems highly probable that he will not upgrade his eyes at all, rather the Shinju will do it all for him.

So what does this mean? Did Kishi alter the process somewhat to match his final vision better? Perhaps did Kishi over simply the explanation Obito gave back then in order to keep some secrecy on the matter? It just seems like a serious deviation in the idea, considering the process would have included a serious upgrade in Doujutsu for Obito, which likely will not happen now.

Thoughts, comments, concerns, suggestions?

Well he technically already has a Rinnegan eye, if that's what you mean.
No, he directly implied back then that he would upgrade his eyes (both of them) to the 9-tomoe which is required to cast the Genjutsu. So no, if things did go the way he explained them back then, his eyes would be upgraded to the 9-tomoe at this point and he'd be casting the genjutsu himself rather than letting the big tree do it.

When he said "I'll magnify the power of my eyes to ultimate level", I think he meant that he was going to revive the Juubi in it's final form, which would grant him access to the Sharingan eye within the tree stem. Now, that statement could be interpreted either way, sure, but with current facts its probably safe to bet that thats what he meant.

I guess its a matter of whether or not you think he needs to be inside the plant for it to work. If he becomes part of the plant, than you could be right. On the other hand, if he stays independent of the plant while it casts it, than it has nothing to do with upgrading the power of his eyes.

My whole point is that he planned to enhance HIS OWN eyes in order to cast the genjutsu. Obviously most of us thought his eyes would get upgraded to the 9-tomoe to accomplish this, but perhaps him melding with the plant before it casts it could be considered consistent with his original explanation.
