So he actually gone through all of this to lose, did what Orochimaru told him to do to find his truth but in the end all he did was pointless infront of Uchiha.
He couldn't overcome Itachi's genjutsu which he told he was ready for it, whatever it was, but fall for it.
I don't know if we have to blame Itachi for being that good...
But because he is already dead we will never know how he got two of Rikudou's treasures which are OP.
Itachi basically had plenty of options to defeat this master villain.
Firstly with Totsuka blade we already know he had.
Secoundly Amateratsu which Kabuto cannot overcome as anyone else.
So he also got Tsukoiomi which were OP and known as a 1 shot jutsu.
And Izanami which made Kabuto his toy.
So Kishi made Itacti way too powerful, I don't think there is another shinobi with such deadly arsenal, perhaps Edo Madara, so we can say that the outcome of their fight was obvious.
