It started off Naruto crushing on Sakura because she was pretty, cute, and/or beautiful to him. Everyone has childhood crushes, I'm sure you thought this boy/girl was cute in elementary or middle school, right?
Now I'm not getting too much into this. Just read my words carefully. Sakura loves Sasuke, Naruto wanted Sakura's attention, but he realized that he didn't love her. In the course of the manga you could really see their relationships growing closer, but it wasn't romantic. It was a deep bond of domestic love; Family, friendship, teammate, etc.,
Sakura cared for Naruto has much as a sister would care for her brother.
Naruto cared for Sakura has much as a brother would care for his sister.
Sure Naruto asked her on dates. Are they related? Is she a girl? You can answer these.
However Naruto never showed a true romantic side for those feelings, he was mostly trying to mess with her, or to take her mind off of the person she keeps thinking about.
