When they fought as a kids , Hashirama a slightly the upper hand ( the two were very exhausted ).
After that they kept fighting over and over again without a winner , until Madara got the EMS.
We didn't see anything of this fight , the only thing that we saw , Madara getting the EMS thinking he is a badass , go challenge Hashirama and after a H24 fight he is on the ground surrounded by Senju with no Uchiha on his side no even a corpse.

In the final fight , Madara used Kyuubi and Susanoo , and Hashirama used Gonzo and Bouda , so they are equal here ,no one cheated , and in the end Hashirama won ( with a cheap shot ) after a lot of difficulty ( and his wound proves that ).
