I always wondered why SAO was so popular as I could never get past the few episodes.

I like it because of the story line, romance, the setting of where the anime takes place (inside a virtual reality mmo), character design, and other things (the action scenes are good, but are honestly rather minimal in comparison to the romance).

But really I like nearly every anime/manga I've ever watched or read.

If someone likes the anime for the reason you said in your post, good for them. That isn't a specific reason as to why I like the anime, but is a part of the story which I do like.

I like the action, but I also like it for the characters, development, the theme, story, gaming, etc.
There are many reasons to like it.

I didnt have the intetion to generalize, but it just seemed that way to me after what my cousin told me.

I couldn't get into the series as the plot started having holes in them way too soon and inconsistencies started. So I figured people stayed for the romance and action.

He doesn't turn into a girl, he transferred his character over and during the process it messed with his character design. His game avatar became more feminine, but it was still a male avatar and it only happens during gun gale online.
