never did he says that he will make Sasuke a hero he said that he wanted to make him strong or at the very least protect him - on all accounts Sasuke is pretty strong and still very much alive

He was keeping Akatsuki away from Konoha which he was told do so by Danzo. He was never assigned to destroy them since no one knew the full potential of Akatsuki and its members

no itachi DID want sasuke to be a hero. thats why he made himself a villain and a scumbag to the people of the village. if sasuke were to kill itachi and comeback to the village he would be considered a hero and a fresh start cleansing the name of the uchiha.

and yes itachi DID want the akatsuki destroyed he knew whatever they were doing was endangering konoha thats why he was plotting to kill obito but could never do anything but a bad martydom.
