I think he went too far trying to become his own ideal image of "ninja". He was a rather interesting character but I wouldn't want to meet him in real life, that's for sure

At the end of the day, he's a guy who had an inferiority/superiority complex and wanted to surpass Hiruzen. So much that he wanted to rule Konoha at some point. Most of the things he did were for his selfish gains (ie: gaining power)... which blew the idea of him being a well-intentioned extremist out the window... he only cared for Konoha if the actions he'd commit could possibly lead to him being Hokage in the future. However, his brutal actions did protect Konoha (though many were not needed and did indeed have repercussions), so I guess he's an anti-villain. He's too complex to be called a villain, after all.

I feel neutral about him. He was doing his best (what he thought was needed) to protect Konoha. Even though, he took advantage of the massacre to get the eyes, his morals and some of his actions weren't that "sensitive" or "morally" correct.
But, I don't hate or like his actions.

Even tho his actions were (considered by most) to be "bad" and rather shady, he was honestly just a man who cared about the wellbeing of the village. He understood the meaning of sacrifice and that there is a dark side to all shinobi. Not everything can be butterflies and rainbows and friendship like Naruto preaches

Definitely one of, if not the biggest ass in the series. He was an ass to Hiruzen when they were kids, conspired against Hiruzen and tried to assassinate he and Kakashi, created his own little blood mist village under Konoha, likely played a part in Orochimaru's rebellion, placed blame of the Kyuubi's attack on the Uchiha, underminded and disrespected Hiruzen and Tsunade, made Itachi the one to destroy the Uchiha, refused to find another way to stop the Uchiha with Hiruzen, conspired with Hanzo and aided in creating Pein, took Shisui's eye, stole eyes from dead Uchiha, stole Hashirama's cells, ursurped Tsunade, tried to brainwash Mifune, killed Myoboku's messenger, stalling Naruto and allowing Pein the time to destroy Konoha, hiding under Konoha during Orochimaru's rebellion and Pein's invasion, allowing countless to be killed and the village to be completely destroyed, desensitized and enslaved Sai..I'm sure I forgot a few things lols.

He did have his moment of unselfishness however when he sacrificed himself in the name of Konoha rather than trying to escape, but it's not enough for me to forgive him. He was definitely a realistic character and a great antagonist however.

He is a character that I truly dislike. I know that he also wanted to protect Konoha, but he was moved by his ambition to become Hokage some day and his rivalry with Hiruzen. He is not a well intentioned and selfless extremist like Itachi, most of his actions were driven by his desire for power. For example, the sharingans in his arm implied that he forced Itachi to kill his clan not just because he wanted to avoid the rebellion, but also because he wanted to take the sharingans for himself in order to gain power.

If he wanted to protect Konoha that much, why didn't he help during Orochimaru's invasion? Why didn't he help during Pain's invasion? Because of political reasons. He hid himself like a coward when the village was in trouble, waiting Tsunade and Hiruzen be removed from power, so he could become Hokage.

He is not a "hero of the shadows" like Itachi was. He was just a coward power hunger that lived in Hiruzen's shadow due to his jealousy and put his ambition to become Hokage above all.
