When BZ said Madara wasn't stupid, he wasn't correcting himself. He was stating that Madara knew full of what Hashirama was capable of, and took precautions in the form of a Tensha Fuuin.
If he did somehow win the battle, he could either cancel the technique or let it run it's course. After all, the Rinnegan restores EMS power anyway.
