Gear 4 probably has some major drawbacks. So no, they are not pointless.

They won't be useless. Gear 2 and 3 are (I think) easier to get in to. If they were useless from the moment luffy knew g4 he would've used it with the Noah problem at Fisher man Island.

No lad all that means its Mingo just moved really fast on that attack.

That would imply he hasn't been struck in G2 yet, which he has. Taking that one hit won't do anything. If that was a drawback we would literally be back at square 1 in G3

I dont think 4 has made 2&3 obsolete but rather its an addition to Luffy's seemingly harphazard style but really its a well thought out strategic take down of opponents. G2's basic function(along with base maybe) is usually to stun the opppnent so as to create an opening for the more destrucfive G3, that will either deliver the killer blow or damage the oppnent much(as per Lucci) that it will coz the enemy to be taken down later or soon after with g2(or even base). As for G3(to add) its really more useful vs a stunned or pinned opponent that way theu cant evade but get a devastating hit that shatters their stats that even if they can get up they are not that far off the edge.

G4 is faster than 3, stronger than 2 but i think its not faster or stronger in the reverse scenario, however its sort of a throughbred state with high marks in speed and strenght and so can deal damage to those who wont b that much affected by g2 and can side step 3. I belive g4 will b used to drop the health meters of opponents to lvls were g2 can deal damage while maybe recovering(coz theres gotta b a catch) or they r so shattered that those more destructive g3 hit can connect now coz the opponent has been pushed far ebough that they cant manuever to exploit the openings that 3 creates.

Gear 2 is still faster and far more agile, Luffy is literally bouncing around.

Gear 3 has more AoE, he can hit much more with his giant fist.

Gear 4 will probably strain Luffy's body to the max.

Actually he isn't that fast in gear4. He seems to be fast only because he is currently combining gear4 with gear2(we see smoke around him), but the gear4 mode is more for less rubber compression, rendering him like a sort of balloon, more flexible and more strength than in gear1 or 2(but less than in 3). However the bouncy effect leave him open like we've seen with Doflamingo in this chapter. Also, he probably can't even stretch anymore in this state judging by the rubber inflation

So no, all in all, gear4 has his weakness and it can't alone replace the other gears
