To be totally honest, I don't think Boruto 'activated' his Dojutsu yet. I mean in a sense, even Sarada/Sasuke didn't realize they awakened their Sharingan until much later after it 'awakened'. But I think rather that his Dojutsu is forcing itself out, because of that chakra. However, he hasn't been able to tap into the power willingly yet. Sarada did so in the Gaiden/Boruto Movie, and Sasuke finally re-awakened the Sharingan during his battle against Haku.

I think Boruto is going to have a real awakening in the vast future. Because his future self does learn how to activate it, with a hand seal. Current Boruto cannot however (Manga version).

To be totally honest, I don't think Boruto 'activated' his Dojutsu yet. I mean in a sense, even Sarada/Sasuke didn't realize they awakened their Sharingan until much later after it 'awakened'. But I think rather that his Dojutsu is forcing itself out, because of that chakra. However, he hasn't been able to tap into the power willingly yet. The lion is likely some alien monster related to the Ootsutsuki, hence why Bolt's Byakugan-relatd eye activates around its chakra. Once this Lion thing is dealt with, they may keep the eye out of the spotlight until he actually awakens it for real on his own in the manga, since it's only being triggered atm.

Probably to put emphasis on the fact that Boruto actually has a Dojutsu. If he just opened his eye, it would of been hard to tell. But the combination of the scar, him using a hand sign, and then the close up on the eye, pointed to the fact that he was awakening something.

Anyway yeah, Himawari deserves a Gaiden at least.

The only theory I've read in regard to what and where the monster is, is something about it being in another dimension. Not really sure, but I'm sure it will get explained as the future episodes roll out.

Hand seals are for newbies to help them control their Charka easier. Experts can use techs without them (Hashirama w/ healing compared to Tsuande).
