He could have FTG to obito at any point and killed him. If range is an issue, he could have killed obito as soon has obito tried to attack the village again. Minatos logic 'You need the 9-tails power to keep up with him' really made no sense.

Minato's sacrifice was completely unnecessary and made Naruto's life so much more difficult than it had to be.

Minato could have killed Obito at any time.

Range is not an issue for S/T ninjuutsu. That is why it is called S/T, because it doesn't care about space or time.
