As stated in the manga, the Uchihas eyes evolve the more they fall into darkness. They can't handle the loss of a friend or a loved one. That's what evolve their eyes and give them such power. Mentally, they are weak and can't cope with life's difficulties. They are peaceful children at heart. Take a look at Obito and Madara. Both had Naruto-like personalities as children. Itachi was the type to cry a lot when no one was looking. Sasuke too now, after learning about the tragic story of his brother.

Sad Uchihas = Powerful Uchihas
Happy Uchihas = Weak Uchihas

tobirama had the best answer, they carry their strong love deep inside, their intensity of love is stronger as love of he senju.
best example is itachi, he carry so much love for sasuke inside himself, that he choose to fall in darkness and get the power because he love him so much, he has nit so much hatred but his suffering was enough to unlock susanoo.
in madaras case was not only the suffering, it was hatred too.
the failure is that the uchiha hide their extrem powerfull love, and when they loss it, they fall into darkness.
