Sounds made up to me. Kishimoto stated a while back in an interview that Hidan's body is immortal, but to sustain it he must eat, thus he can technically die of starvation eventually.

He wasn't originally meant to be like that. He was supposed to be a bukijutsu expert (master of weapons) like Sasori and Shurado with several techniques and weapons hidden in his sythe and body, but Kishimoto's editors made him skip remove that and rush the fight and the end of the Hidan and Kakuzu arc to get to the Itachi Arc for reasons I'm sure you can figure out lols.
