you should see the youtube comments of any video containing Ace vs Smoker, its filled with fools saying Ace could have easily gotten rid of Smoker even without Haki -_-".. and i personally blame Oda on this one, he made the dude lose 3 times in one Arc, when he got his ass whopped by Law and then Vergo later on in the Punk Hazard Arc, i was groaning with frustration; he doesnt even use his Devil Fruit right, i wish someone would just break that damn sword of his so he can start using his abilities like Enel-_-

We need a fight with Smoker vs some supernova with no sword to showcase his real skills, what do you guys think about Smoker so far in the timeskip?

Yes he is being underestimated

But that doesn't change the fact that Ace could probably have dealt with him quite easily in Alabasta, you have to take into account that Smoker back than was a relatively unimportant Marine while Ace was the 2nd Div commander of the WB pirates, the first and third div commanders could tussle with Admirals for a while

Also, Ace most likely had Haki

It's too bad since Smoker was facing Law, Vergo, and Doffy altogether after TS in one arc. It would have been too illogical if he could one-up them, though i bet Smoker was just in shock with his heart got taken by Law during their battle, led him to unconsciousness. He was fine and dandy after he woke up, their fight was hardly affected him too much by physically. But with Vergo, it was a different story.

I always sees Smoker as one of the top VA, regardless of what people say. Him getting VA title within 2 years says a lot of his ability to be compared with other marines. He needed more screen time after this.

I agree however I think a lot of people don't understand what Oda was trying to show with Smoker's character development in Punk Hazard I mean every relevant character has character development look at it this way each of the Strawhats have been defeated at least once in the series.

Smoker ever since his introduction hadn't lost a single fight yes you can say this was due to his logia abilities however the fact is if a character has no character development and just sail easily through the series without any sort of trouble their character quickly becomes stale and let's face it quite boring (Zoro is sort of getting to that level with all the fodders he is fighting).

Now onto the Punk Hazard arc I don't think it was Oda's purpose to make Smoker look weak he threw in plenty of implications that showed us he is around the level of Law and Luffy it's just the majority of the fanbase just look at it as if you lose you're weak it doesn't matter how strong the opponent is.

Now with Law I feel Smoker had no chance purely to progress the plot and to hype Law I mean Law wasn't going to lose he needed to join with the Strawhats etc...however considering Law's over powered ability (He literally teleported Doflamingo to take a hit) Smoker was able to go toe to toe with him while pushing Law back to a retreating strategy. The fight between Law and Smoker was a good fight Smoker was at the disadvantage from the get go considering Law has the ability to 1 hit almost anyone who isn't tiers above him in fighting power.

Then with Vergo this fight I feel a lot of people ignore what Oda tried to portray with Smoker's character development. Smoker went into the fight with the purpose of getting Law's heart back however as we seen Smoker was able to out speed and send Vergo flying. However Oda implied Smoker was going for Law's heart due to the fact he owed Law a debt for saving him from the cage he and Tashigi were trapped in and as Law specifically states "You hate being in debt to a pirate that much..." another thing is Vergo practically states Smoker wasn't fighting at his full capabilities because Smoker was trying to use a distraction type of fighting style by extending his smoke allowing him to get hit by Vergo's Haki, had Smoker been fighting for the purpose of winning he would have pushed Vergo harder he may not have won but he would have pushed him a lot harder.

Then Law was able to beat Vergo by slicing him in half with his 1 hit moves, granted Vergo had been confident enough to take the attack with his Haki however again it goes to show how haxxed Law's powers are.

Finally we have the Doflamingo fight...I mean anyone holds this against Smoker really has a grudge on his character I mean he was injured from his fight with Vergo (Sanji's meals do not heal they help speed up recovery not heal) also he was without his primary weapon his Jitte however the fact he chose to not only anger Doflamingo but also call him 'Joker' shows how fearless he was of Doflamingo.

The way I see it is no good character has never lost a fight or has been brought to the point where they need to train or take a beating to show them this hell I bet back in the day Roger, Garp and Whitebeard didn't just solo everyone. So Smoker probably will be getting stronger I mean he already has impressive CoA and speed the next time we see him he'll be quite the powerhouse still I mean Oda has shown us Luffy thinks Smoker would be a challenge for him at full power so that itself should speak a lot about his strength.

What I've noticed the people who tend to underestimate Smoker or hate on his characters are:

- 'Extreme' Zoro fanboys who can't accept the fact Smoker is either stronger or of similar strength of Zoro.
- People who hate Smoker for chasing Luffy and class this as 'annoying' when they don't complain about Garp chasing Roger.
- Coby fanboys 'if that's even a thing'.
- Smoker haters.

Now in regards to the whole Ace vs Smoker argument on Youtube. I've seen it I tend to ignore because the intelligence of the majority of people on Youtube is fairly low. The way I see it Ace admitted a fight with Smoker was pointless as their devil fruit abilities cancel each other out not to mention there is absolutely no evidence to say Ace had CoA so the fight would have ultimately ended in a draw. Now if Ace had CoA he would have won but he didn't show it or use it so we can only assume he didn't have it.

Fact is Smoker is Luffy's marine rival has been chasing him since East Blue and across the grand line the two have fought and nearly killed each other multiple times and their relationship is developing from enemies who want to fight to enemies who want to fight but respect each other's strength. Oda has been consistent of this relationship throughout One Piece and it would make no sense and be illogical for this to stop so I wouldn't worry Smoker isn't weak no matter what people try to say and he will be fighting with Luffy again some time in the future.

I blame Oda. There should be a limit to how many times a character can get owned in a single arc.
This. I'm glad that he got an arch to shine and show more of his personality and growth in, but if that's how it had to be getting whooped, I think he could've been delayed until a later arc. Punk Hazard wasn't the place for him to show up.

Another reason I really believe that Smoker lost all of his fights, was because he was being used as a hype-man by Oda to demonstrate the strength of others, which I greatly dislike, as well as plot. If he were to beat Law (which was really the only fair fight he had), people would've been saying 'he's nowhere near ready for Mingo'. And if he had beaten Vergo... well, that would've been fair game honestly. But Oda wanted to demonstrate the full extent of his slicing abilities, and to demonstrate that he can at least give Mingo a good fight.

But him losing to Doffy was fine by me. He was still wounded, and he was way above him. I mean what did people want him to do, defeat him? Get real, that would never happen at that point in time. So many things in the plot would've been thrown off it's not even funny. Then people would be saying 'so he can beat Mingo, but not Law/Vergo?' and that wouldn't have made sense.

Ace was stronger but he couldn't beat Smoker same vice versa their devil fruit powers cancelled each other out and since neither had CoA at the time it was a pointless fight.
In retrospect I'm completely sure the 2nd Division commander of the WB pirates had CoA and CoO, Oda wasn't completely sure with himself what Haki was and how to present it even at MF (300 chapters after Ace v Smoker)

The man Whjteberd wanted to make the next Pirate King should have Haki ... Even Tashigi has it :/

He didn't need Haki, he had the WB Pirates protecting him. WBs training is either shit or he didn't really try to train Ace since 3 years before MF Ace could fight on par with Jinbei. You would think that being trained for 3 years by the Worlds Strongest Man would make you strong enough to beat Yami BB.

Fancy titles amount to nothing if the character doesn't provide the feat. It seems to me Oda knew exactly how he was going to incorporate Haki from the moment Shanks was able to scare the sea monster with his Haki.

Ace had the ability to use Haki however he was like Luffy in Marineford he could only use it unconsciously, I think Oda was trying to show us Ace got to confident with his logia ability and didn't incorporate Haki into his fighting style.

Fact is if Ace did have Haki when he was going against Smoker which is more than likely due to the fact there is no evidence at all for Ace having CoA then it's even worst for Ace not to be able to beat Smoker as there fight ended in a draw.
