I was having some slight hesitation about making this thread, but I need the rep points so whatever. I wanted to discuss something that's been on my mind lately. It's about Sakura, I mainly, though it could connect to Hinata and Ten Ten as well. I always wondered why they portrayed women like those two as weak. It always seems like Saukra, Hinata, Ten Ten want to be strong, and they do achieve some power, but they never seem to be truly on par or catch up with their male counterparts. I think this fact is referencing to women struggles to gain rights back in the early 1900's. Women have fought for and gained the powers and rights they hold today, yet still don't always hold equals grounds to men. This is just like Hinata, Sakura, and Ten Ten, they are always portrayed as weak individuals struggling to catch up with and be as strong as the dominant males. Even when they gain strength and power through hard work (like women of the 1900's petitioning and fighting for their rights), Naruto, Sasuke, Neji, and Lee always seem stronger and advance even further ahead. I know Naruto always complained about how he needed to train to keep up with Sasuke so he could bring him back, but Naruto has power, Naruto is power. Sakura is further behind them both and will never catch up. It seems like they're saying "you've had your fun, you've gotten stronger, now conform, go back to being a house wife, cooking, cleaning, watching our children. Men will always be stronger, we're the main characters after all..." Seems to me like they almost fodderize Sakura and Hinata, not to even mention poor ol' Ten Ten and Ino. Of course they have hokage's like Tsunade and Mei who are legends and very strong, but honestly they're push overs. The way Tsunade cowards over blood, can't protect those she loved (her boyfriend and brother) and is never in much control of the situation (Tsunade and Jiraiya vs Orichimaru or Tsunade weakly threatening pain). It puts us all under the assumption that these female characters (especially sakura, which people make out to be the Pan of Naruto) useless, weak, good for nothing but healing men when they're injured in battle. That's why Konoichi are encouraged to become these Medic Ninja, to become these tools pushed aside in battle until they're needed. Even Karin is the Taka's group medic, as in the recent fillers men have always just used and abused her and threw her to the side. As one who appreciates and loves women, I just find this sudden realization that the anime "Naruto" is slightly sexist, disgusting.

Kishimoto is sexist........and so is the Japanese culture........in Japan men are viewed as the dominant ones it's just how it is and how Kishimoto grew...

What could of made the series better in my mind for woman :

Goals other than boys.....characters like ino

Insane obsession with a boy........Sakura, Hinata, ect


Moving on from a boy.............it would of been nice to see TSUNADE move on from Dan and love JIRIYA but she took to long and when she finally wanted to give JIRIYA a chance he dies......

Sakura should of moved on from sasuke after that murder attempt.......should of never married him

Hinata should of had other goals other than NARUTO KUN........She should of became the leader of her clan

There's a lot of thinks I would do different if I was Kishimoto but I'm not

It's hard to write a female and Kishimoto doesn't like to take chances. Not to mention this genre is targeted towards pre-teens more than anything.



It could be worse. Look at FT. Sure, Erza is strong, but she's used as fanservice every other scene.

Poor character development, you also have to take into account the role of the female character, background, etc.

Just look at anime/manga such as: Attack on Titan, Akame ga Kill, Sword Art Online, Fate Zero, etc.
They have outstanding female characters.

Just look at anime/manga such as: Attack on Titan, Akame ga Kill, Sword Art Online, Fate Zero, etc.
They have outstanding female characters.

Gender roles have been placed into mindsets for thousands of years, it's quickly changing but the fact that you think it will be gone is sort of unrealistic and being offended by this is as well.

there's nothing sexist about it. Kishimoto is just one of a number of authors who weren't very skilled at writing female characters. Just to point this out about the part where you say readers are left to assume the female characters are good for nothing besides healing guys: you might not have noticed, but there were actually male medics that were seen in P1 and P2, and they were taking orders from Sakura and Tsunade.

Now if Kishimoto were sexist like that, he'd have the two of them taking orders from them, or literally have Konoha's medical roster be made up entirely of females taking orders from a male. Tsunade and some of these other females you mentioned weren't made to be OP or have fantastic character development because they weren't MCs in the least, nor did the central focus of the story have a lot to do with them personally. Full Metal Alchemist had a female author, and its best female character probably wasn't anywhere near Fuhrer Bradley's lvl or was as OP as Father.

Female characters not being developed as well as male characters is common in fiction. It's not like someone starts writing a story with every intention in being sexist towards characters that don't exist.

I'm going to be honest and say you sound like one of those dudes who say they support feminism, but you really just saying that because they trying to get some easy *** from a girl and think dickriding their opinion will get you on her good side, but that's just my cynical side talking.

I definitely don't agree. The women aren't the best written characters in the series, and? At least they aren't being used as shitty fan service like most other series. I would rather have a boring ass one note female character than one who who has to show her tits and ass off for comedy.

Well excuse me for sharing my opinion, and I'm sorry if my thoughts offended you. I said nothing about how I hoped it would change, I was simply briefing everyone on my thoughts. Also, the only reason Kaguya is the strongest is because of the Japanese eastern legends and even then she was defeated by two males, which is the majority of a typical squad, ex: Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura. Lee, Neji, Ten Ten. Shikamaru, Choji, Ino and so on. Always has to be that one douche bag who wants to make everything seem negative. Not saying that was your intention, but that's what you made it feel like.​
