Genjutsu literally meaning Illusionary Art/Techniques, are on the 3 abilities a ninja must master alongside Ninjutu and Taiijutsu. Genjutsu just as Ninjutsu requires chakra to work and is associated with handseals, but there lies a main difference. Unlike Ninjutsu who do damage to the physical body, Genjutsu do the damage to the Spiritual body, so to the brain. Genjutsu is the manipulation of chakra in the opponents brain, causing the disruption of senses, not allowing them to act normally or just as they want to. With Genjutsu you mostly rely in creating images in the opponents brain, which are often called a false reality, with Genjutsu you can even manipulate the opponent into thinking that your choices, are the best choices to be followed.

The Exact way how Genjutsu work is that the users chakra effects the cerebral nervous system, thereby effecting the 5 senses of the enemy. Mostly Uchiha are very related to Genjutsu since their Sharingan makes the genjutsu really detailed and nearly impossible to break. Or if you posses a high enough intelligence, so that you can cast the genjutsu as detailed as possible.
The people on the influence of a genjutsu will stay unmoving, and they will pretend to actually move in the genjutsu world. Other types of genjutsu might even focus on controlling the movements and the choices the enmy makes in order for them to be as the user desires.

You can't manipulate the will of the opponent but you can change the way he perceives things and you can mess up his senses. It is induced by injecting your chakra into the opponent and throwing his balance between the spiritual energy and the physical energy placing them into an illusion.

Now, how do you release from a genjutsu?

There are 3 ways how to release from a Genjutsu, all are followed by the same first step. You first gotta realise you are in a genjutsu. That process is sometimes the most difficult, since you gotta check the surroundings correctly and realise what things aren't normal in this world. But this task surely is different in most times. There exist genjutsu, users that good that can make the genjutsu nearly undetectable. So the ways how to get out of it are.
1. One way is to disturb the chakra flow in the body, once you stop the flow of chakra in the body, then the chakra flowing in your brain will stop for a brief moment, snapping you out of the genjutsu.
2. Another way is the Genjutsu release, or Kai. With this you can flow fresh chakra in your body, once you do that, you disturb the control the other person has over your brain and nerves.
3. This way is by having someone else give you chakra. In this way, he will disturb your chakra flow for a brief second and you can snap out of the genjutsu. This is sometimes not perfectly effective since your friend must know you are in a genjutsu.
4. The 4th way is actually very strange. And the hardest to do. Another way might be having a big pain in your body. which will disturb the chakra flow as well. But it is really difficult because you might not even be able to move. or even another way, is that by the type of genjutsu, you must harm yourself on a roughly same level and cause really big, undesirable damage to the body

Good. Here is a thread I want you to read and study which will tell you all you need to know about genjutsu and on how to cast and release it. After reading the thread I want you to sum everything up in our training thread here with your own words. So no copy/paste or anything of that sort. And I want you to be detailed. This you have to know at all times, imprint it into your mind.

Ok, Where should I start...
Genjutsu, literally meaning Illusionary arts are the ninja abilities that unlike Ninjutsu or Taijutsu that deal physical damage. Puts the enemy into an illusion effect.

There are 2 types of Genjutsu in general, Chakra fueled ones and others who aren't. Those who aren't chakra fueled, are simply paradoxes or illusions which can be overcomed with simple logic, while the others are a lot more complex. And are casted on one of 3 different ways. Those being : Doujutsu enabled Genjutsu, Sound based Genjutsu and Normal Genjutsu.

Genjutsu work by disturbing the chakra flow of the enemy with your own chakra into the brain disrupting their senses. During these actions you simply force the senses of the victim to perceive things that simply aren't there. So you can trigger each of the sense's and make them See, feel, smell, hear close to everything you want. But that requires you to manipulate his chakra, so you need to be close enough for the connection to be stable. So the main limitation of Genjutsu is only Range...

Genjutsu work's entirely on breaking the balance of that chakra flow. By disturbing the chakra flow with your own, you can put the enemy into the genjutsu. You simply disturb the spiritual energy with the physical one and dragging the person into an illusion. But the most important think here is that you are gonna need a medium, or something that triggers the genjutsu. That in most cases is a handseal, maybe a sound, light and even eyes contact. This will help us focus the chakra flow inside the user's brain disturbing the chakra flow and dragging the enemy into an illusion.

Genjutsu only manipulate the senses, so whatever happens to the users mind, the body will stand still at all times. Every single attempt to control the real body will mostly cause the enemy to only move in his imagination. But there are some genjutsu which focus only on one specific sense, allowing the information of the other senses to come correctly to the brain. Like for example only altering the vision making someone see a field of flowers while in reality there will be a cliff.

While many think Genjutsu can be casted instantly there will always be a small time frame in the middle of the Trigger and the actual jutsu, and that time frame might be the best time to counter the jutsu. This is the moment you have to be fully focused and the genjutsu might take effect very fast, but if you don't the enemy might get free from it without needing to worry a lot.

Genjutsu Detection is done in 2 basic ways, Detecting it by relying in your personal logic and noticing the fluctuation of the chakra flow. Once you are suspicious about something in particular you must analyse everything carefully and make an educated guess, to see if you are right or not. While it is really a dangerous game it always comes down into a gamble to see if you actually are in the illusion or not. As for the second way, to actually be able to notice the fluctuation, it entirely depends on the skills. If you are bearer of gifted eyes like sharingan or byakugan, you can to some degree realise everything and counter the genjutsu accordingly. Chakra sensors are different, they first need to realise what is wrong in order to check the chakra fluctuations with the Sensory ability.

So after finally noticing you are in genjutsu, the most important job is to release the jutsu and that can be in 3 actual ways.
And they all come down to altering the connection of physical and spiritual energy and stopping the chakra flow for some brief seconds. After that is done the genjutsu can be finally released. One way might be the receptors of pain, despite genjutsu can actually alter them, there will always be a difference between real pain and one that is made up. So by actually hurting yourself, you might be able to snap out of a genjutsu.

Another way, might be doing the fluctuation, stop of chakra flow yourself. And that is basicly done by the will power someone bears. As you realise you are in genjutsu, you can still control the chakra flow around the body, and if your control and will is strong enough you can change the direction or stop that chakra flow from the brief moment which will get you out of the genjutsu. But that entirely depends on the training as well, the more skilled you are, the better chakra flow you have, and the bigger is thw chance you can get out of the genjutsu. And the signature skill that most likely does that, and that is the genjutsu release Kai, a jutsu created for the sole option of getting outside the genjutsu.

And the last way, is the way that is most secure of course, is when you have another chakra, which will be fueled inside you, once that is done, the chakra flow will be altered and unbalanced actually releasing you from the jutsu. So, having a partner giving you his chakra, like fighting with a friend, being a jinchuriki or being in sage mode(natural energy), can automatically cast you out of the genjutsu.

Now the last part of genjutsu if genjutsu layering. It happens when the user, or his allies cast 2 or more genjutsu on a person which don't conflict with one another, causing the illusions to be mixed and even stronger. It works based on the level of the genjutsu. Like if a lower level genjutsu is used over a weaker higher one, it would simply fill the empry space. If the stronger/ higher ranked one is used afterwards.

To counter these kinda of genjutsu, you simply need to release the one which has the highest rank, and you automatically counter both at the same time. In cases when they are at the same rank, you simply have to counter one of the genjutsus and both will be rendered useless directly...

Boy...That was a wallie, even in my standarts >.>

To release the genjutsu by hurting yourself, the level of pain should be sufficient. As I said before the real pain and genjutsu pain have a difference that can be told appart. So to break out from D genjutsu, the pain of spanning a finger, or even biting it would be enough. For a C rank, you need low level attacks or pain or eve biting the inner part of the cheek hard will suffice as well. For B rank taijutsu you are gonna need taijutsu and low level pain to get through. For A rank taijutsu you are gonna need something stronger. For example A level taijutsu, Stabbing yourself in a minor muscle, breaking small bones and even low level burns or shocks. S rank taijutsu are really tough and you are gonna need pain reallt strong to get out from it. EIG or even Sage level taijutsu can bring it, breaking major bones, stabbing yourself deep, extreme cold and even med level burns.

This is of course in the pain side, which isn't actually very efficient. Yes you get out of the genjutsu but the wounds will bring you a lot of problems during the rest of the battle since you are going to be wounded. The altering of chakra is a lot more effective in these cases. You can stop the chakra flow with the Genjutsu release and pause the genjutsu without hurting yourself. But you are gonna need a specific battle rank to use it. Jounin can break through C ranks, an S-Class can break through B rank, a Sannin can break through A ranks. And you need to be a Sage for S ranks.

But there is even another way. And that way is to use a jutsu which will force the chakra flow to be transferred to a specific part, altering theflow and breaking a genjutsu. But in order to do that the jutsu used needs to be at least 1 rank above the genjutsu used on you. And if the jutsu is Raw chakra it needs to be 2 ranks above. Like to break a C rank Genjutsu you are gonna need a B level jutsu.

I will post the technique and explain everything I can about it. You will then tell me it's usages, weaknesses, strengths etc. basically anything you can think of, okay? No need to perform the techniques.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

A D-ranked technique which allows you to alter any aspect of the terrain. You can basically change the entire looks of the battleground in your opponents mind. You can use it twice to create a layered genjutsu and alter the terrain some more.

Ok, So this basic D rank genjutsu which manipulates the optic senses and tricks a person into thinking he is seeing something else, so perfect usages might be in a place where the environment is life threatening like a cliff, in a river with dangerous currents, in a place where there are various beasts that can kill a person easily ect. So best usages are in these kinds of environments where you trick the enemy into thinking he is stepping on a landmass while there isn't any actual land there.

Weaknesses might be in most cases the fact that the enemy will not be fooled easily. If the enemy is smart enough or at least adept with jutsu he knows that the environment can't be changes in an instant. Of course there being a few exceptions when you talk about the god of all shinobi *looks at Kaguya*. Another disadvantage are the other sense's. You might trick the enemy into thinking they are seeing a field and not a dangerous water current, but the hearing will tell him otherwise. He will hear the water current and realize he has been placed under illusion.

Strengths might be killing the enemy easily without using any chakra. Making the murder seem like and Accident. Another strong point is tricking the enemies sight and launch an attack at him while he sees the same background, with that you can not expect him to counter the attack easily. And another strong point is use the genjutsu maybe twice and create an illusion in an illusion, in making him think that the safe part is actually dangerous.

I love the way you analyze the techniques, exceptional!

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

After doing 5 hand seals you seem to disappear in a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals then go towards the opponent, blocking the opponents vision of you. It's a handy technique since you can mask your presence and use it to your advantage. It has a mid range reach so you can easily cast it. The drawback is the amount of hand seals you have to perform but since there are a few ninjutsu techniques with the same principle, it is a bit hard to deduce it's a genjutsu.

Ok, so usages might be many. One of them is blinding the opponent, making him think that you disappeared, even though you are standing in the same spot. Another usage might be directly after using this technique you throw a weapon to the enemy, or even a strong attack, the chance of them being deadly are high since the opponent can't see. Yet another one might be blinding the opponent when you are at a disadvantage or when he is about to use a jutsu. He will see you are no longer present and not cast it saving yourself one time.

Weaknesses are as you said the large number of seals. The amount is simply way to big to be actually a quick attack so the enemy will respond directly, not giving you the right amount time to force your chakra into the enemies brain and cast the genjutsu itself. And yet another way disadvantage is that if the enemy is adept with skills he will realize that it is impossible to turn into petals. And if he were a sensory, he would feel your chakra still collected in one place and not shattered around. He would detect it was an illusion and counter the genjutsu.

Strengths are the fact that you can put the enemy into an illusion even if he is in mid range, giving you move possibilities. since it only disturbs the optic nerve another way you can use it is to simply blind the opponent currently leaving the normal body unmoving and being able to hit him with an avalanche of jutsu which will for sure kill him. Yet another strength is if you are losing you can use this jutsu to create an opening and retreat for the moment.

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

After doing one hand seal you throw a kunai. In the illusion the enemy will see a clone instead of a paper bomb which will explode upon reaching the enemy.

Ok, so this technique has a number of usages one of them being the obvious, the perfect time to use this ability is in the beginning of a battle. If you are able to trick the opponent into thinking that a clone is coming close to him, he will be ready for close combat, so a taijutsu battle mainly. But then the bomb explodes as he is turned into ashes, or even if he survives, the rest of the battle he will be deeply wounded and won't be able to show his full potential. You can say this battle is a win. Another way might be after the bomb you follow with a jutsu which has a wider area or you follow with a jutsu which will attack him from behind. So he might be able to protect from the kunai but the attack will be lethal. And another usage is when there are or more enemies.

Advantages would be that you can finish a battle before you actually start it. In this way it will be totally easy to take care of the enemy. This technique might be very useful even if you are in a mission since the battle will end in simply instants. And yet another advantage is that mostly inexperienced shinobi will always go into a close range fight due to their instinct. So this will be their doom.

But there are always disadvantages. One of them is the fact that sensory ninja will feel there is absolutely no chakra into the clone and directly consider they are in illusion. Another disadvantage is that you will be neither making seals or anything else and the enemy will consider that it is impossible to make clones without seals. And another are the other senses. They will see the clone appear but they won't hear the noise of the clone being created. They will neither smell the clone for ninja with amazing smelling skills. Or another total lucky way might be countering the clone with an earth wall. He will snap out and even catch the kunai. But the possibilities of that to happen are lower then finding a pot of gold in the end of the rainbow.

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

A technique where you create multiple illusionary clones that emerge from your sourroundings. If they are attacked they multiply.

( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.

After to hand seals you make your opponent see leaves swirling around them. After several seconds the opponents sight will be clear from the leaves seeing the image of their biggest fear giving you a chance to make them faint.

So usages for the first technique are thousands just like every other genjutsu. The user will appear to see many clones emerging from the ground, trees, ect, so he will once again be ready for close combat. As he appears to fight the clones, the clone will simply turn into 2 more. In this way the enemy will be left always busy, never actually knowing it is a genjutsu. While in real life, you could simply kill him in thousands of ways, even a kunai aimed for a critical organ could do the trick. Best time too use this jutsu is once again in the beginning of the battle which will allow you to deal with the hassle quickly and not use the valuable chakra for no reason.

Advantages are the fact that this genjutsu could literally go on forever. The more times the enemy will hit the clones the more will emerge causing him to never fully feel like the end will come. He in a way or another might even end the fight considering he is ridiculously outnumbered to continue the battle.

Disadvantages are quite a few as well. In a way or another very calm logic and people who aren't hot blooded might take the time and analyze the fact that the enemy can't create clones without doing any seals. Or even if he hid the clones in ruble and rock he will realize none of the ruble disappeared so there was no way the enemy to have created the clones from nothingness, without seals even from his vicinity. Yet another disadvantage are the nerve receptors on their skin. When you punch one of the clones for example, your knuckles will feel a certain push from his cheek for example. So if that feeling is lacking, it in a way or another means you are punching nothing, you simply are in genjutsu. And not forgetting the obvious, if the enemy is a sensory he will feel no chakra in the clones and snap out of the genjutsu!!!

Ok, for the next genjutsu. Once you make the 2 handseals, you will start forcing your chakra in the nerves of the user. The leaves will surround him and then the biggest fear will appear. Where do I start with this. So obviously the perfect usage of this skill might be scaring the opponent so much he faints. Once he is in that state you could literally do whatever you want with him. It is a one hit K.O . You do not need a specific time when to use this skill you can do it since the beginning so the battle has ended without it fully beginning. You could simply make with it whatever you want.

Advantages for this jutsu aren't a ton. But in a sure way the style of how the genjutsu is really good. Making the leaves take effect first the enemy even though he might be cautions will be slowly calmed, the leaves itself and the wind gives you a feeling of secureness. And then when the leaves stop, the most terrifying thing will emerge in the view of the enemy which will be totally contradictory to what happened before. The sudden view will be enough to cause the strongest fighter to at least be scared.

Disadvantages are to be fully honest more then I would have liked them to be. There are quite many which will make this genjutsu not so effective. First one, the leaves will appear to move around the enemy. But only the optical nerve will feel the moves, the leaves must make noise for it to be fully believable. So a very cautious enemy will be able to tell a genjutsu here. Another one might be the sudden disappearance of you, not many shinobi are able to directly disappear into thin air. So if the enemy is smart he will know, you might not even be able to use that skill. Another else might be that if the enemy is calm and smart enough will consider that the possibility of the greatest fear appearing are 1:1000. And if the biggest fear of a person is a supernatural being, or a dead person, you will simply know a genjutsu is cast. And the final one is that if the enemy is sensory, you can easily tell you are in genjutsu since he can't feel the chakra of his/her biggest fear.
