Sins of Our Fathers

Prologue
_______________________________________________________________

I was brought into a world that was not what it seemed. They hated my kind, the humans that is. They hated me not because of who we were, but for what we represented. We represented all that was bad in humanity. And yet they didn't even know the truth behind our creation, or the creation of the world they now lived in. We were simply a tool used to control the masses. To keep them from asking questions and uncovering the truth of their pasts. I sometimes wish that I hadn't uncovered the truth, as it would shake the very foundations of the world we lived in. My name is Hypnotiq and this is my story.

It began nearly forty years ago. The world's climate was growing ever warmer and all efforts to find an alternative source of energy to fossil fuels stalled. The oil companies had grown so powerful that they were able to control the world's governments with the dollar. They lobbied to prevent funding to research towards clean energy and succeeded in dwindling the funds. Surprisingly the climate change wasn't an issue. The changes were far less severe than scientists had originally estimated. The world seemed to have dodged a bullet, but that thought pattern soon changed. Nations such as India and China, the two most populated countries, had a second industrial explosion. Oil usage went through the roof. This inevitable led to a world wide energy shortage.

Where there is a need, there is a supply. And the needs of the world found a new supply in an unlikely place. By the year 2021 the ice covering the continent of Antarctica had virtually disappeared. An endless expanse of land opened up and every country in the world wanted to get their hands on this new territory. At first there were no issues. After numerous meetings between the leaders of these countries a system of boundaries were built giving each nation a moderately large expanse of land. And for a few years it seemed everyone was happy. But all good things must come to an end.

The energy crisis grew more and more severe. Oil prices were sky rocketing and the civilians of the world were growing frustrated with their governments. They demanded something be done to ease the strain of the problem. And in the year 2026 that breakthrough came. The last sheet of ice covering Antarctica had melted the year before and scientists were astounded by what they discovered. A massive reserve of oil, the largest the world had ever seen. Early estimates concluded that it could power their world for the next hundred years at the least. But there was one issue. Who's oil was it? The oil field stretched through five separate territories. The Unites States, Russia, China, Japan and Israel all had some of the oil on their land.

As the powers bickered back and forth trying to determine who would get what, the economies of the world sank into depression. The energy crisis worsened as the Antarctic oil remained untapped due to slow progress between the countries. Citizens became increasingly angry with the slow progress of their governments. They begged for them to reach an agreement so that drilling could begin. But the leaders were too greedy. Wanting the oil for themselves they failed to come to any sort of agreement. Citizens across the globe began to protest and riot. With the added prospect of full out revolt the situation erupted into violence. It was the beginning of the war to end all wars, World War III.

The world was consumed in war for the next ten years. There were no sides as there were in past conflicts. It was literally every man for themselves. The casualties were unimaginable. Just when it seemed like no end was in sight it happened. The Apocalypse. Not by the hand of the devil, but through the minds of men. Its been forgotten who launched the first one. But the results can never be forgotten. The world was consumed in the fires of nuclear warfare. No place was spared. Life on earth was pushed to the brink of extinction. Human life dropped from thirteen billion, all the way down to three thousand. But in these dark times there was but a single light.

In a world where nuclear warfare had scarred the face of the earth and land became infertile, a single place remained prosperous. An old power was about to re-emerge to lead the recovery of mankind. The Catholic Church. During World War III the church lost Pope Benedict. With a road paved in violence laid before them they elected Cardinal Nexus to the papal office. The Cardinal had previously been a general in the Latvian army and the church believed that under his leadership they would stand a chance in the new world. During the great war the Church's power grew and it became a light in the darkness. People flocked to the walls of the Vatican to seek refuge from the war. And this is where most of the remaining two thousand humans would survive.

As the world woke from war it found itself in a hazardous and alien environment. The surrounding country was charred and saturated in radioactivity fallout. Even in the seemingly safe walls of the Vatican the radiation levels were dangerous. This gave birth to my people. It was seen in 15% of all new born children after the Apocalypse. A bright green tint with a soft glow in the eyes. A mutation of our genome due to the high levels of radiation. The normal humans viewed us as disgusting, as a lesser being. The leaders of the church shunned us and kept us segregated from the general population. They called us their "Sins". Our eyes were a sign of the sins of those who came before us. We were God's punishment for pushing ourselves to the brink of extinction. These eyes became a symbol of evil and thus we were persecuted. And now we exist as a reminder. A reminder to mankind to never forget. To never forget, the Sins of our Fathers.
