So what we know of the stages of the sharingan are:
1) It is first unlocked under stress, such as combat stress being most typical.
2) More stress unlocks higher tiers.
So the base sharingan is based on emotional stress.
3)MS is unlocked by a strong sense of emotional loss, such as losing a friend or brother.
So the MS is based on stronger feelings that are more love/hate related and not so much stress.
Theory Starts:
4)MS most likely starts going blind due to loss or using up of the special chakra released by the emotions.
Lets consider this an imperfect eye that uses the chakra faster then the Uchiha's body can produce it and damages itself with the strain.
5)EMS is unlocked by adding another related MS to the users current MS. This creates a perfect eye that uses less of the chakra to use the same techniques causing some physical stress (eyes bleeding) but not enough to damage the eyesight.
6)Rinnegan in my opinion is unlocked by having Senju DNA and accepting this loss more or less Madara unlocked his by finally accepting that Izuna and his brothers were gone and came to terms so to speak with that fact and that he was going to die soon.
So in summary the Uchiha have 3 seals on their emotions and on the chakra in their brain that is released.
The first is released/corroded by emotional stress.
The second is released by emotional loss.
The third requires powerful chakra added (Senju DNA) a more perfect eye (EMS) and finally acceptance and inner peace.
This idea would follow the more or less trend of the manga and Buddhist principles of accepting the events around you and finding peace within yourself.
Please discuss.
If this is right then consider Sasuke coming to terms with Itachi's death and that is how he gets Rinnegan.
That would be the reason to see the Hokage from a plot point of view.
