I'm actually curious if he called it a "Snake Sage Mode" or a "Dragon Sage Mode," now.

Obviously, he learned the Sage Mode from the snakes. Then he enters sage mode and says that he has ascended from a snake to a Dragon... but I don't believe he actually called it anything other than "Sage Mode" (or rather, claimed that he was a Sage).

Naruto doesn't really call it "Toad Sage Mode" now. Jiraiya was called the "Toad Sage" - but that's about as far as it went, I think.

no they dont refer to them as toad or snake, they simple say sage mode it could be that naruto or jiraiya doesnt know about the snakes teaching sage mode. but to from the readers perspective you know that its toad sage mode due to the toads teaching it and the toad-like features the user gets same goes for the snakes

Why are there any variations to Sage Mode, at all?

Why does one make you look like a toad and another make you look like a snake? They do the same thing.

It's not slug sage mode. Hashirama could have learned to draw on nature energy by himself for all we know.
