I agree that he took major damage, but wasn't the chapter called theatrical suicide? and wasn't his first stage sharing all damage with opponent? his bankai is still active so he appears to not be dead, though that attack got him completely by surprise. Also he is noted for being unpredictable as said by aizen a few chapters ago

There is the matter of Aizen. Shunsui does have the keys that are restraining Aizen, who has grown stronger, despite doing nothing for 18 months. He could tip the scales. He is a war potential.
