Shout out or Rip-Off?

So,in this manga I am writing there is a character who is really lazy and unmotivated but also extremely smart when it comes to combat. Anyway,I was thinking since he is similar to Shikamaru I was going to add a small reference to him and make my character look up at the sky and wish he was a cloud like what Shikamaru did when he was up against Temari. I was thinking would this make him a rip-off?

hmmm it sounds almost exactly like shikamaru.. a rip-off would be someone exactly the same..

if ur gonna make this character it needs to have certain different quirks so it becomes its own unique character

Nah, go for it. Just don't call him Shikamaru and give him shadow jutsu. You can take traits (Not everything of course. You've taken just two things, which is good) and the cloud thing is a little shout out. I'd say it's okay. I'd say maybe not do the cloud thing exactly, but have some sort of cloud reference if you really want it.

There's a close line from inspired and rip off.

Not really, since mangakas usually base their characters off others' works, but as long as your character remains original despite many similarities, you are alright.

Well if it's just a reference (shout out) and doesn't contribute much to the character's actual philosophy then I don't think it should matter much. Though if you ask me I wouldn't tread on the subject x_x again, you can do what you want with your story!

Don't worry kishi has copied quiete alot of his stuff from other mangakas so you can do the same since you are copying a copier.

Why make the characters seem even more similar to the person you're not sure if they're ripping off, man? Do like me and if you feel like the characters are too similar make changes.

Nah, that's not cc, the character just has a trait like any other any character. What makes a cc is when a character copies literally EVERRYTHING The other does in till it's unrealistic anymore. influences are good but too much is cc

A reference isn't too big an issue, but just make sure he's not as similar to him as you say.

The name is Ryukou but I have yet to upload the pages I've already drawn to Deviantart. But I'll let you know when begin to upload them. =D

Shikamaru is one of my favorites from Naruto. I didn't feel like I needed to make changes from the get-go because the Brilliant but Lazy trope is kind of common.

Sounds like an homage, which is perfectly fine. Just be sure that he has personal identity, so he won't just be seen as that "shikamaru guy"
